John Hammond's Spirituals to Swing concert showed the continuity of gospel, jazz, and rhythm & blues by presenting Count Basie, Big Joe Turner, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade "Lux" Lewis, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sidney Bechet, and Big Bill Broonzy on the same stage.

John Hammond is also credited with discovering and/or signing artists ranging from Billy Holiday and Robert Johnson to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Maple Blues Award winner David Vest performed with Big Joe Turner in the 1960s. His own career has spanned the spectrum from spirituals to swing and beyond, from Sun Ra to rock and roll. While he is best known as a blues artist, his music is really "beyond category."

Expect a rousing evening of jazz, gospel, blues, and boogie-woogie.
