Trumpet Fiesta presents a hard-swingin’ sweet & soulful program starring virtuoso Miguelito Valdes & young lion Lachlan Craven; coming together to share the rare beauty of two trumpets playing together in a quintet setting. Completing the the Quintet is an all-star rhythm section consisting of Nick Peck, Brock Meades, and Ethan Olynyk. Showcasing well known two-trumpet repertoire as well as original arrangements; 2 delicately crafted sets of music have been created for this special show. One night only!!!
“Described as one of Cuba's most highly regarded trumpet players of his generation, Miguelito Valdes carries a rich history of performing with many of Cuba's top performers, including the Cabaret Tropicana Orquesta, Pablo Milanes, Isaac Delgado, Chucho Valdes, and has participated in award-winning recordings such as "La Rumba Soy Yo", which won a Latin Grammy in 2001. He has also played with important jazz musicians abroad, including Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, Wayne Shorter, and many others. Since making Victoria his home, he has become very involved in the local music scene.”
"A swingin’ Canadian trumpet player with a unique vocality in his sound; Internationally performing musician Lachlan Craven is carrying the torch of American Music tradition on a pathway of innovation. Currently based on Vancouver Island, Lachlan has made appearances at notable venues in Vancouver, Toronto, Amsterdam, and Barcelona, and has shared the stage with the likes of John Lee, Simon Rigter, and Benjamin Herman’s New Cool Collective Big Band. In 2019, Lachlan was selected to be a part of the Canadian National Youth Jazz Combo, where he performed at the Toronto TD International Jazz Festival. He has toured in Spain (2022) and Denmark, performing in the 2023 Copenhagen Jazz Festival. His warm, interactive, soulful sound invites an audience to share the story he tells through improvisation. At the age of 17 he moved to Amsterdam to pursue his musical education and career and has completed his BMus at the Conservatory of Amsterdam as of summer 2023.”
