Vest Plays Brubeck: Dave on Dave

Sat. July 6th 2019 8:00pm - 10:30pm doors at 6:00pm (All Ages)
$25
David Vest and his band play the music of jazz piano legend Dave Brubeck, best known for “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk.” But of course his achievement went far beyond the radio hits, the cover of Time magazine, and the famous experiments with time signatures (5/4, 7/4, 9/8, even 13/4). So while some of the songs will be familiar to almost everyone, other tunes may contain real surprises and new discoveries for many listeners.

The first set will be devoted entirely to music written and/or recorded by Brubeck and his classic quartet. The second set will also contain some classic Brubeck material, but may also wander into music inspired by Brubeck, including one or two of Vest’s own compositions.

David Vest is a five-time winner of Canada’s national Maple Blues Award for piano player of the year. He saw the classic Brubeck quartet live in 1964 (he was already a fan). While known mainly for blues and boogie-woogie, Vest plays pretty much everything, and his previous shows devoted to the music of Thelonious Monk, Sun Ra, Mose Allison and other jazz figures were well-attended. Besides, Brubeck himself was no slouch at blues and boogie-woogie, as audiences around the world could testify.
