Help Us Keep Hermann's Jazz Club Live - Learn More Here

History

Hermann’s Jazz Club began 36 years ago at the Bastion Inn when Hermann Nieweler [Knee-well-er] was persuaded by his friend Barry Stubbs to book Friday Harbor’s Island City Jazz Band for a weekend performance at his hotel. Hermann’s love for a good party, the music and the patrons had him establish the Dixieland Inn at the hotel.

Hermann moved the club to the current View Street location in 1986 when it was renamed “Hermann’s Jazz Club”. In 2000 our 753 View street location suffered heavy damage from a fire. A testament to his commitment, Hermann rebuilt at great personal expense. Our friend Hermann passed on June 10th, 2015. His family continues to be dedicated to this very special venue and our community is trying to preserve the venue. https://jazzonview.com/

Many nationally and internationally acclaimed acts have graced our stage. Long time bands at the club include CanUS Hot Jazz Band, the Tom Vickery Trio and Dixieland Express. Now there are another two generations of musicians performing in what is an ever growing list of wonderful performers and good times. As a music listening room with a casual atmosphere, today Hermann's Jazz Club is a landmark in the world of modern live performance.

Walking into Hermann’s, you can’t help but notice the countless pictures of musical friends, the old instruments, and the eclectic artefacts hanging on the walls. Toni Blodgett (CanUS Hot Jazz Band), remembers the walls being quite bare 35 years ago compared to today. A baritone saxophone on the wall near the front entrance of the club is a gift to Hermann from Alfred the Flower Man. Hermann had a blacksmith make a mount to place it in the spot he picked. Hermann had a great memory when it came to the room decor. After months away at his home in Vancouver he would walk in and ask who moved this or that picture from there? There is a pair of home stereo speakers still mounted high on a wall because they were his first set of speakers...he also used them to listen to band cassettes before hiring back in the day. There is a broken clarinet hanging from the time someone fell into the bandstand and broke Al Pease's clarinet. Hermann got his insurance to pay for a new one. Another relic is the accordion in the corner. Hermann related that in the early 90's a really good accordion player performed here. After the show he told Hermann that he desperately needed to get to northern Ontario to see his ailing mother and asked Hermann to loan him $750 and hold the accordion as collateral. Also of note are the many plaques in gratitude for Hermann's many years in support of high school bands.

While appreciating the deep history behind each picture and each object in what has been described as a sixties rec room, there can be no doubt that music is the adhesive behind it all.
