After being nominated for Songwriter of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, David Vest and his band present an evening of all-original music. David’s songs have been covered by artists ranging from Tammy Wynette to Downchild, but nobody does them like the man himself.

David Vest’s reputation as a piano player — he’s been named piano player of the year four times since 2012 — has in some ways obscured his achievement as a composer and songwriter. Obviously, with this new nomination, things are changing!

Vest has been writing as long as he has been playing piano. He won a prize from the Academy of American Poets in the late Sixties, and his lyrics have been printed as poetry in places like the Virginia Quarterly Review, Shenandoah, and Antaeus. His lines often first strike the listener as tossed-off, conversational, almost effortless:

“I saw you talking in the grand cafe.
Somebody shook their head and walked away.
You left the change, you kept the tear,
And you’ll never get satisfied way down here.”
